This is a good practice for the preparation practical assessment with an introduction to some useful new techniques. I find that students are more enthusiastic with a little competition, so I always tell them in advance that I shall grade their product in terms of yield, dryness and purity.

You need to keep an eye out for solid iodine. It has a habit of being spilt onto bench surfaces with consequent transfer to skin and clothing.

Materials:

Iodine solid (5 g) 4M potassium hydroxide solution (10 cm3)
0.1M sodium thiosulphate (for stains) Ice bath
Boiling tube Glass rod
Spatula 400 cm3 beaker
100 cm3 beaker Bunsen burner
Tripod and gauze Buchner flask and funnel
Filter paper Desiccator
Dropping pipette 10 cm3 measuring cylinder
Vacuum line or water pumps Vacuum tubing
Balance reading to at least ± 0.1 g Sample bottle
